Finally Kde Plasma 5.2 on my Arch Linux

Francesco Mondello 4

Finally I had enough free time to get Kde Plasma on my Arch Linux workstation.
Installation was pretty easy but understanding how things work now was not because there are some differences with Kde4.
In fact Plasma 5 and Kde Frameworks 5 are both based on Qt5 while, at the moment, most of Kde Applications are Qt4 based so that may bring to some graphical inconsistencies.
However I will talk on how to install Plasma on Arch Linux on a next post. Here are some screeshots of my Arch Linux workstation.

  1. Very Nice. Looking to make the switch to Plasma 5.2 myself very soon. How’s the overall experience been for you?

    • Although I had not yet enough time to test it to the end, my first impression was really positive. Plasma 5.2 seems to be very stable even though is on a early stage.
One of the best things of Plasma, in my opinion, is krunner. It’s search features are really impressive. I love also the application launcher.
However I think there are a some graphical things that needs to be improved. For example some popup messages (when the user passes the cursor above an element of the system tray) tend to disappear too fast or too slowly and sometimes they remains stuked between windows and this could be a bit annoying. But surely these early problems will be fixed with the next releases. 🙂

Just switched myself. Missing some of my widgets from KDE4 already (just coverart and News mainly) I’m sure a few replacements will be allong shortly.. I’m getting some glitches on the start menu occassionally, and the default task switcher setting was really weird, it would actually ignore everything on the current screen when set to all desktops/all screens, but maybe that’s just me.
Screenshot via the PrtScr button tries to go to a non-existent webpage, had to resort to scrot.

    • Yes, sometimes I’m getting some glitches too and I need to restart the plasma session. For starting ksnapshot when PrtScr is pressed you need to redefine manually the keyboard shortcut on the kde system settings panel.
